History – During Battle of the Philippine Sea, Submarines Scored Big

Sea Power – The first day of ìThe Battle of the Philippine Sea,î June 19, 1944, is also remembered as the day of the ìGreat Marianas Turkey Shoot,î a day that cost the Japanese more than 300 aircraft (See June Sea Power). While this date is well noted in naval aviation chronicles, it is also a milestone in the annals of the submarine force for entirely different reasons.

Italian Navy – Oto Melara Munition Gives Naval Guns Low-Tech, ëNonlethal' Precision

Sea Power – In an age characterized by missiles guided by sophisticated electronic seekers and a constellation of satellites, an Italian arms company is taking a different approach to precision munitions. To increase the accuracy of widely used medium-caliber naval guns, Oto Melara is employing the concepts of low drag and high speed with a new munition called Ammunition Reduced Time-of-Flight (ART).

US Navy – Small Bomb Could Vastly Increase Strike Capability of U.S. Aircraft

Sea Power – A small precision bomb being tested by the Pentagon holds out the promise that tactical aircraft of the near future will be able strike three to four times the number of targets assigned to U.S. planes operating over Iraq today. The bombís small size and precision would vastly improve the attack capability of U.S. aircraft simply by increasing the arsenal that could be sent aloft.
