Naval News – The Portuguese Navy’s first deployment of a submarine to the Arctic – and under the Arctic ice – earlier in 2024 demonstrated the key contribution diesel-electric submarines (SSKs) can make to NATO underwater operations in the region, the navy has told Naval News.

The War Zone – A conventionally powered Portuguese attack submarine has completed a rare voyage under the Arctic ice. As well as being a first-of-its-kind mission for the Portuguese Navy, the deployment underlines the growing importance of the Arctic theater to NATO’s submarine fleet. Although it’s nuclear-powered boats that traditionally dominate in this challenging area of operations, the Portuguese deployment demonstrates that conventionally powered submarines have a role to play here too.

El Snorkel – The trip is carried out within the framework of the “Open Sea” mission, which provides for the collection of information that will be delivered to Portugal and NATO and its partners. (In Spanish)

Defense Technology International – The first of two first of two Class 209PN air-independent propulsion/diesel-electric submarines for the Portuguese navy was launched at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), Germany’s lead submarine building yard in Kiel on July 15.
