SeaPower – During Operation Iraqi Freedom, a small, ill-equipped, yet elite unit of Marines fanned out across Iraq, attached to U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division, British Commandos and Marine Task Force Tarawa. The 46 men of 2nd ANGLICO, one of the Marine Corpsí Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Companies, were at the forefront of battle in every major battlespace of the war.

US Marines – Small Unit Leadership in Future Security and Stability Operations

Marine Corps Gazette – Several years ago the Army began the use of the acronym, SASO (stability and support operations), as a counter to the staid MOOTW (military operations other than war). The Marines have adopted the SASO acronym to mean security and stability operations as describing current activities in Iraq. The author stresses the importance of decentralization and small unit leadership in SASO.
