New York Times – The United States intends to close one of its two foreign naval bases that service nuclear submarines. The 33-year-old naval base at La Maddalena, off the coast of Sardinia, will close because of “military reshuffling.”

US Navy – Japan to host US nuclear carrier

BBC – Japan is to allow a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be stationed in its waters for the first time. The vessel will replace the USS Kitty Hawk, the US Navy’s oldest active ship, when it is decommissioned in 2008.

US Navy – The Mach 7 Munition

Sea Power – The Navy is planning experiments with artillery that would be able to hit targets with precision 200 to 300 miles inland. The high-tech weapon would give naval surface ships a new, persistent ability to provide indirect fire to Marines or other inland maneuver forces that are rapidly outrunning the umbrella of current naval guns.
