US Navy – Small Company Races For Place On Navy's New Ship Program

SeaPower – The effort to develop and build the Navyís novel Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a classic clash of industrial titans. To foster competition and restrain costs, the serviceís ship procurement chiefs have pitted teams of contractors headed by Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics in a contest for possibly $12 billion in orders and a major foothold in the world market for advanced shallow-water warships. Out of the limelight, however, a lesser-known contest is shaping up that over the long term could prove vital to the Navy. Small companies are racing to win a spot on the LCS, bringing with them innovations in technologies such as power systems, communications and intuitive software.

US Navy – Lockheed Martin Expands Missions for Littoral Craft Concept

Sea Power – Lockheed Martin has expanded yet again the missions proposed for its Covert High-Speed Attack & Reconnaissance Craft (CHARC). Originally envisioned primarily as a surface warfare platform, Lockheed has added the support of Special Operations Forces and, subsequently, littoral antisubmarine warfare and mine countermeasures to its repertoire. An unmanned version also is under consideration.

US Navy – Ohio Subs Would Be Best Basing Mode for New Interceptor Missile

Sea Power – The U.S. ballistic-missile defense system will be significantly enhanced with the deployment of the new Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) being developed to intercept hostile missiles in the boost and midcourse phases of attack. The KEI is a large missile, which is necessary for it to develop the acceleration and speed needed by the missile defense system.

Sea Power – While much of the public controversy related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) has swirled around Iraq and the presidential debates, the United States and its allies appear to be slowly making headway with a lesser-known effort to track down nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Sixty countries have become supporters of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), an effort to stop shipments of WMD, their delivery systems and related materials worldwide.
